Gould Huskies Lose Tough One to Kents Hill in First Home Game

Despite the fact that it is May 8th, yesterday marked the Gould Boy's Varsity Lacrosse Team's first home game. Unfortunately, even though the Huskies played their hearts out, Kents Hill won 13-7 in an up and down game. The Gould squad struck first with three unanswered goals, but Kents Hill battled back to bring the score to a 3-3 tie at the end of the first quarter. The second and third quarters belonged to Kents Hill who opened up a 5 goal lead going into the fourth quarter. Gould rallied in the beginning of the final quarter but Kents Hill proved too much for the Huskies despite their exhausting and courageous effort.

Gould's defense played a heroic game with Willie Courtney '07, Andrew Young '08, and Milo MacPhail '07 taking most of the duty. Additional contributions from Alden Young '07, Scot Baribeau '09, and Max Zotz '07 rounded out the defensive squad. A very impressive effort from the offensive corps of Brian Schroy '07, Max Littlefield '09, Matt Rossiter '08, Adrian Bouthot '08, Eddie Mele '10, Jon Parsons '08, and Ian Sotir '08. Without question, however, the MVP of the game was once again goaltender Jimmy Catlin '07 who recorded over 20 saves in the game and kept the Huskies' dreams alive to the bitter end.

The JV Girls took on Fryeburg in their third game in the season. At halftime, the Huskies were down just 5-4. The girls had no subs, however, which gave Fryeburg the edge in the second half. Lacrosse, JV Girls: 4/30
In the second game of their season, the JV Girls Lacrosse team faced the varsity team from Oxford Hills. Once the Oxford Hill Varsity Team secured a solid lead of 7-1, they finally began to sub in their JV players, but still maintained a solid Varsity base. Regardless of this seedy and unsportsmanlike behavior, the JV girls were virtually unrecognizable compared to their first game. Countless times, the ball barely missed the goal, and the groundballs were again all Gould! Victoria Bobbe '10 played an outstanding game at center, winning almost every draw, and midfielder Tomi Chipman '10 completely shut down her more experienced varsity opponant. Kelly Chen '08 had an excellent game as point gaurd, doling out some nice clean checks and creating many turnovers. Every single member of the team played an incredible game.

Softball, 4/25
Gould welcomed Telstar High School to Park Field in their home opener on April 25th.
In a tough 15-4 loss to the 2006 Class C State Champions, the Huskies had a tough time hitting off Telstar's speedy pitcher. With only 8 hits in the whole game, the Huskies weren't able to build on their impressive defensive game to gain an edge. Freshman Kelly Galvin made her pitching debut and showed great promise for the future. - Becky Cummings

Lacrosse, JV Girls: 4/21
Gould's J.V. Girls' Lacrosse Team traveled to New Hampton School on Saturday for the first game of their season. All but two of the JV players had never before seen a lacrosse game. Given that they practiced for a month in extremely limited space (mostly on driveways between snowbanks) and without a goal or goalie, the girls did remarkably well in their first competition. Though they lost on the scoreboards, there were many small victories througought the game. Center Victoria Bobbe '10 won every single draw; Sarai Johnson's '10 and Hwa Mi Lee's '09 midfield hustle and aggression turned over the ball several times; Tomi Chipman '10 and Kelly Chen '08 played oustanding defense, and So Yun Sun '09 scored for the first time this season. In addition, Gould came up with the ground ball nearly every time. Good job, ladies!

Gould Boys Lacrosse Drop Two Over Weekend
The Gould Boys' Varsity Lacrosse Team had a frustrating weekend, dropping games to Hebron Academy and New Hampton School. On Friday night, the Gould squad lost 13-2 to a very athletic Hebron team while playing under the lights at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland. Although Gould took the early lead with a goal scored by Adrian Bouthot '08, the Lumberjacks netted nine unanswered goals in the first quarter. After the first quarter, Gould got its head in the game and played great defense and held the Lumberjacks to a 4-1 game in the remainder of the game. Gould will face Hebron at least one more time this season on May 5th and will try to redeem themselves.

The real dogfight of the weekend came the following afternoon on Palazzi Field as the Huskies of Gould took on the Huskies of New Hampton under clear blue skies and on natural grass for the first time this season. New Hampton came out firing and scored three quick goals in the first quarter. Gould regained its composure and answered with three goals of its own. The game stayed within one or two points the rest of the way with New Hampton squeaking out a one goal win, 10-9, as the final seconds ticked off the scoreboard. While the game was another disappointing loss for the hard working Gould squad, it was the first truly complete game the team put together this season. Goalie Jimmy Catlin '07 continued to demonstrate his netminding prowess with well over 20 saves on the day. Attackmen Matt Rossiter '08 led Gould's scorers with three, while Co-Captain Brian Schroy '07 and Adrian Bouthot '08 each walked away with two. Max Littlefield '09 added a goal to his season tally and Eddie Mele '10 scored the first regular season goal of his high school career. Gould's defense also stepped up to the plate with key contributions by Andrew Young '08, Alden Winder '07, Max Zotz '07, Scot Baribeau '09, Ben Milner '08, and Stephen O'Connor '09. Moreover, Co-Captain defensemen Willie Courtney '07 and defensive midfielder James Olcott '08 left every ounce of energy on the field with their impressive hustle and gutsy play. Despite the loss, it was a great day to be a Gould Husky.

Gould takes returns to its league schedule on Wednesday with an important matchup against Kents Hill and on Saturday against rival Hyde School. - Zack Lehman

Tennis, Varsity Boys: 4/21
The Gould Boys' Tennis Team traveled to Kents Hill on April 21st and were finally able to play a 2 out of 3 set format. While not successful from a scoring standpoint, all of Gould's players realize what real competition and a longer format represent. Congratulations to Ryutako Ozasa '10, who played his first singles match. This freshman shows great promise for the future.
- Bob Baribeau

Tennis, Varsity Boys: 4/18
Despite cold temperatures and snow in Bethel, the Boys' Varsity Tennis team traveled to sunny Portland to play North Yarmouth Academy on April 18th. All singles players were competitive in the pro-set format. Kevin Dawson '09 and Kristian Bjornland '09 were victorious as the #1 doubles team. Sydney Roberts '08 and Dachuan Zhu '08 came up a bit short against a polished NYA duo. Good job Huskies! - Bob Baribeau

Softball: 4/19

The Gould Softball Team traveled to Tilton Academy on Thursday for their first game of the season. Although they lost 12-4 the team played much better than one may expect from a team who hasn't had the opportunity to practice on a softball field this season.

The Lady Huskies came on strong in the first inning scoring all 4 runs of the game. Danielle McKay-Mudge '07 pitched an excellent game walking only 2 batters and striking out three. She also hit the only double of the game. In her softball debut, Sophomore Seana Siekman got on base for the first time as her teammates cheered her on. The team is looking forward to much success for the remainder of the season. - Becky Cummings

Lacrosse, Varsity Girls: 4/18
The Girls' Varsity Lacrosse Team finally opened their season at North Yarmouth Academy after many weeks of indoor practice. The team did extremely well for never being on a field and having very little time outside. Carey Hadden '09 started the scoring for the team this year with her first career goal just 10 minutes into the game. Hilary Reis '09 also added 3 goals and did a great job at center. Other goal scorers were Sara Kerney '08 and Chelsea O'Brien '08 each with one. The team had some great passing and played some fine defense with a few interceptions and great turnovers. Alexia Rho '09 made her debut in goal and had a fine second half with 6 saves. The team will next travel to New Hampton schools Saturday while we wait for the snow to melt in Bethel. - Sue Garder

Lacrosse, Varsity Boys: 4/18
Although the Gould Boys' Varsity Lacrosse Team endured another difficult loss to Scarborough High School yesterday, the game demonstrated how far the Huskies have come in just one year. After a rough go of it against Scarborough in 2006, the Huskies lost by only a seven goal differential yesterday to the defending Maine Class A State Champions, and played within three goals of the Red Storm through halftime. In the end, with the score 11-4, it was clear that Gould has elevated its level of play and intensity, especially when one considers that Scarborough draws its team from over 1000 students. Strong contributors on offense included attackmen Matt Rossiter '08 with two goals and Max Littlefield '09 also with two. However, the clear MVP of the game was Co-Captain Jimmy Catlin who made a ridiculous 26 saves during the game. The game against Scarborough wraps up a challenging pre-league schedule during which Gould faced off against 14 new opponents before heading into its traditional MAISAD season. This Friday, Gould will take on the Lumberjacks of Hebron at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland under the lights at 7PM. It will certainly be a great day to be a Husky! - Zack Lehman

Lacrosse, Varsity Boys: 4/15

On Saturday, the Gould Boys' Lacrosse Team continued their non-league preparation for their upcoming MAISAD games with a game against perennial Maine powerhouse Brunswick High School. The two squads met up at Bowdoin College's turf field after watching Tufts University defeat Bowdoin's Men's Lacrosse team is an exciting and eye-opening contest. Although the Brunswick Dragons scored a quick goal to open the game, Matt Rossiter '08 returned the favor quickly bringing the score to 1-1. Brunswick scored several more goals before Jon Parsons '08 put another tally on the scoreboard for the Huskies. Unfortunately, Parson's goal was the last time the Gould team would see the back of the net until late in the fourth quarter when Rossiter netted his second goal of the game; by then, the Dragons had scored a total of 19 goals bringing the final score to 19-3. While the scoreboard was very lopsided in Brunswick's favor, the game felt much closer throughout the game with the Gould team making Brunswick work for every score. Once again, the Huskies were anchored by goalie Jimmie Catlin '07 who served up 16 saves on the day. Other strong play was provided by Andrew Young '07, Willie Courtney '08, Eddie Mele '10, James Olcott '08 and Adrian Bouthot '08. The Huskies will travel to Exeter today and Scarborough on Wednesday for its last pre-season matchups before taking on Hebron under the lights at Fitzpatrick Stadium on Friday at 7:00 p.m. - Zack Lehman

Tennis, Varsity Boys 4/11
The Gould Academy Boys' Tennis Team hosted Bridgton Academy on Wednesday, April 11th. Sydney Roberts '08 and Brandon Haller '08 played conpetitively against their opponents. Seniors Andy Long and Madison Lamar, a new doubles combination, lost but played well. Dachuan Zhu '08 and Kevin Dawson '09, perhaps the quickest doubles combo, came up just a bit short in their match. However, Derek Nagy '09 made a strong showing against his post-graduate opponent and proved himself to be Gould's best ball striker. - Bob Baribeau

Lacrosse, Varsity Boys: 4/11
The Gould Boys Varsity Lacrosse Team squared off against Berwick Academy at a mutual (and snow-free) site in Portland on Wednesday for both teams' first official game of the season. This was the first time the teams had played each other in a number of years so both teams came ready for a battle. Berwick struck with three goals before Adrian Bouthot '08 netted the Huskies first official goal of the season. After another goal by Berwick, Jonathan Parsons '08 bullied his way from the midfield line to the goal for another Gould score. Berwick added a few more goals before Brian Schroy '07 cut the Berwick lead to 7-3 going into halftime.

Unfortunately, Berwick pulled away in the third quarter with impressive transition lacrosse and excellent ball movement. As has been the case throughout the pre-season, outstanding goaltending by Jimmy Catlin '07 kept the score respectable with Gould returning to Bethel with a 12-3 loss. It was another day of learning and continued improvement for the Huskies. Notable play by Matt Rossiter '08 who won 11 out of 16 faceoffs, James Olcott '08 who continued to show great promise as a defensive midfielder, and Eddie Mele '10 who seemed to be all over the field. The game also marked the awaited return of Captain Willie Courtney '07 who is coming off an ankle injury suffered ten days ago.

The team will travel to Bowdoin College on Saturday for a game against a team to be determined and to Exeter, NH for a game with powerhouse Phillips Exeter on Monday. As always, it's a great day to be a Husky. - Zack Lehmam

Lacrosse, Varsity Boys: 3/31 - 4/1
The Gould Boys' Varsity Lacrosse Team traveled to Boston this past weekend to participate in a two-day pre-season tournament with MetroLacrosse, an urban lacrosse program, and eight other prep school teams including Kimball Union Academy, Worcester Academy, Landmark, Waring School, Chapel-Hill Chauncy-Hall School, Berkshire Academy, Wilbraham Monson, and Falmouth Academy. With snow still on the fields in Bethel, this tournament presented the Huskies with their first opportunity to experience full-field situations after only four days of practice. Although Gould came away with one tie against Wilbraham Monson and nine losses, a number of games were heartbreaking one-goal losses. Nonetheless, the squad accomplished its primary goals of learning a number of new offensive and defensive concepts, coming together as a team, and preparing for its upcoming league games in two weeks. Highlights of the weekend included outstanding goaltending by captain Jimmy "Steak" Catlin '07; inspiring hustle by Eddie Mele '10, Stephen Swofford '08, and captain Willie Courtney '07; great faceoffs by captain Brian Schroy '07, and impressive improvement by lacrosse newcomers Max Zotz '07 (who scored a goal in the first game of his career) and Scott Baribeau '09. The team heads to the coast to take on North Yarmouth Academy on Wednesday. - Zack Lehman
